Weekend in the Wine Country

17 Sunday Nov 2013

Early last month, we had the honor of attending the wine country wedding of our NYC friends, Tricia & Steven.  Their Napa nuptials were very much looked forward to by yours truly…I mean, if your guests are going to be getting on a plane to fly to your big event, why not have them jet-set to Napa Valley during harvest season?!?  –Perfection!

As I recently shared, we were in San Fran for a few days before our weekend in the wine country.  I had done it before, but the drive from the city into the wine region was just as beautiful as the first time:  you get to see the landscape change, the ocean mist settle way into the valley, and begin to notice row after row of vineyards.

Our first stop was the home of my favorite cabernet:  Trefethen Family Vineyards.  Trefethen Vineyards

We were so happy to arrive that we immediately signed up for their wine club as soon as we walked through the door.  If you are planning a trip to Napa and want to hit up a lot of vineyards like you’re bar-hopping, I would not advise doing the same.  It is, relatively, a big financial commitment and you usually want to at least TRY THEIR WINES before signing-up for home delivery service.  –We were sooooo eager!  🙂  But, as I said, I haven’t ever had a cab I’ve liked better in my life, so we just dove right in.  They totally took care of us while we were there, though:  giving us a taste of everything on the menu, great service, and tons of advice/info on things from wine tasting in general to a history of the vineyard itself.  And, of course the wine was exceptional, like really REALLY good.  Actually, it was one of the best afternoons I’ve ever shared with my husband. At Trefethen Family Vineyards

We spent waaaaay more time at Trefethen than we thought we would –a testament to how well they’ll take care of wine club members– so we decided to just head downtown to check in our hotel.  Just a note on hotels in Napa:  they are crazy expensive and not very nice (like, you’re not going to get even 3-star accommodations at ~$200/night).  Me personally, I felt like we were in a Motel 6 or Best Western that was charging us $225 a night.  But, no worries, you’re not really spending much time luxuriating in your lodging during a visit to the wine country, now are ya?  That, or you’ll be too wine-drunk to notice the crusty cheap duvet or the old school wall-mounted blowdryer.  Rather, I hear booking accommodations at a bed & breakfast is the way to go.

Our first night ended after a unique, refreshingly different “rehearsal dinner” held in the backyard of a local bed & breakfast.  It was a relaxed yet upscale event and all guests mixed & mingled in the garden at their leisure over wine & passed hors d’oeuvres.

Our agenda for the next morning was all about visiting as many vineyards as we could fit in before the wedding.  We were joined by my husband’s great friend/fraternity brother and he was an excellent addition to the party.  At the recommendation of a family friend, we went straight to Provenance Vineyards.  OMG — what a great start to the day!  The tasting room manager graciously allowed us to sample EVERY varietal they produce (even the crazy expensive ones!) and then we got our very own background tour.  On your next trip to Napa/Sonoma, if you can arrange a private tour for your group at a vineyard, lemme tell ya:  it’ll be the best part of your trip!  Provenance Vineyards

During our private tour, we were treated to a behind-the-scenes insight into wine harvesting & storage.  For example, we got to taste their Merlot grapes harvested that very morning, as well as sample young wine straight from the barrel.

After a stop at Plumpjack, we ended our wine tasting tour at Redd for lunch.  –What amazing food!  I’m still daydreaming about it.  We sat at the bar and the bartenders hooked us up with a generous taste of a local white to “wet our whistle” followed by chef’s tasting appetizers.  Such a wonderful lunch stop — I’m still daydreaming about it.  Next time I’m in Napa, I’m going to put just as much effort into securing reservations at restaurants as I would put into planning our winery visits.  I guess all the highly ranked wine being produced in the region has subsequently drawn world-class chefs?  Gotta have food worthy of pairing with all that fine wine, I suppose.  Seriously, wine takes center stage in Napa, but it is definitely a top-notch foodie destination as well.  Standout entrees from our lunch order were the steamed pork buns and caramelized diver scallops.Pork Buns at ReddDiver Scallops at Redd

Next up, our main event:  the wedding!  Our friends held their outdoor ceremony and reception under the stars on the grounds of Landmark Vineyards in Sonoma.  What a beautiful venue for a wedding!  So very picturesque…  at Landmark Vineyards in Sonoma

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”                      –Coco Chanel

One of the regularly seen blog posts/magazine articles I always eat up are those that feature tastemakers and their can’t-live-without lists.  These “Editors’ Essentials”-type lists never fail to enlighten me on a new miracle product, a carefully curated reading list, or new favorite lipstick.  Plus, I’m completely intrigued by the way stylish people live:  what they eat for breakfast, what fancy sheets they sleep in, what’s on their DVR, etc.  Additionally, I’m currently fascinated with the idea that style is how you live when no one’s looking.

As a result of my study & intrigue, each month I’m going to outline five items I’m counting as my material treasures.  Of course, what I really treasure most in life is my husband, family, faith, and health.  This is just a way to share fun fashion, home decor, beauty products, etc. that I currently fancy.

So, here’s goes for November…

1.  HAPPY FALL!!!  This is my personal ode to autumn, y’all.  I just want to convey my happy welcome of all-things fall:  pumpkin patches, cool fronts, fall fashion, seasonal traditions, the holidays…I love it all!  Plus, this is my husband’s favorite time of year –football season!– and it’s both heartwarming & amusing to see him get so giddy each year it rolls around.  Plus, after a sweltering summer, it’s oh-so-favorable outdoors right about now.  After moving into our new house in June, I relish FINALLY being able to spend quality time in our outdoor living area.

On the flip side, we’ve got to address the pumpkin spice-everything train.  This is an adoration of autumn gone overboard, people!  I mean, I buy a Pumpkin Spice Latte annually to welcome the season, but this year the flavor can be found in candy, cookies, candles, coffee creamer & more.  It’s a bit much, right?  OK ok, it’s not all bad — I brought home some of the pumpkin spice creamer and it’s been a big hit in the mornings at my house!  Here’s me capturing my first Starbucks #PSL of the year on a cable knit/midi skirt kind of day:photo (24)

2.  Diptyque.  I began noticing Diptyque candles on ‘my favorite things’ lists such as this one in fashion magazines a few years ago.  As best I can recall, it was some model of the moment who said she always traveled with the Paris-based brand’s Baies scented candle.  With her hectic work schedule, the soft scent was the one constant that reminded her of home.  Once I started looking into their products, I was a little surprised by the price point:  the Baies 6.5 oz candle retails for $60!  However, the more I smelled each of their scents, the more I read about them in the press, the more I learned about the quality of their ingredients, I can see why they’re so expensive…they’re THAT good.  I recently treated myself to my first Diptyque fragrance purchase, the Vetyverio eau de toilette.  –This is one unique scent:  woodsy, green, and clean; it changes while I wear it.  With its unisex springtime notes, it’s like the opposite of Angel or Flowerbomb.  I think it’s utterly intoxicating in an unexpected way.  Diptyque Vetyverio

3.  NARS Orgasm blush.  With a grandmother who passed her ritual of “rouge” down to me, I was always in search of the perfect blush because it’s an integral part of my everyday makeup routine.  Let’s face it, there were some unfortunate years in college where my liberal use of blush was quite obvious and unfortunate.  But, I’m a blush girl, what can I say?  As my cosmetics ‘first love,’ it’s got to be the one makeup product I couldn’t live without.  Then, one day life in the beauty realm changed forever with my discovery of NARS Orgasm blush.  How did I ever apply anything else to my cheeks?  Huge thanks to my Mother-In-Law for buying it for us girls at Christmas!  This is product is award-winning and revered in the cosmetics community as one of the best cheek colors around.  The coral, golden, dimensional shade is divine — it’ll be a staple in my makeup bag forever. NARS Orgasm blush

4.  La Croix.  Aside from champagne, this natural flavored sparkling water is my favorite form of bubbly.  No calories, no artificial sweeteners, and sodium free — it’s my go-to daily alternative to soda pop.  Their flavors are so good, too!  I like them all, but I favor the Peach-Pear and the Coconut varieties.  Years ago when my palate was less sophisticated (read:  overloaded with too much sugar & even worse, the trained taste for fake sweetness from aspartame), I was introduced to La Croix and thought it was gross.  You might love La Croix at first sip, but for me to fully appreciate it, I had to wean myself off artificially sweetened drinks and develop a taste/appreciation for more subtle natural flavors.  Now, I think all the varieties are so delish I find myself constantly in awe that they can pack so much flavor in the can without any calories.  photo (26)

5.  Fireside candle from Anthropologie.  Bringin’ it full circle, the last love on my list for this month piggybacks on my first:  all-things Fall.  After living in the Midwest for 6 years where there is a distinctive shift between all four seasons, it’s now been a bit difficult for me to truly get in the seasonal spirit.  Austin is awesome and like living on vacation…a friend of ours calls it “life on the island” because of our year-round warmth, acceptance for the most casual of dress and all-around laid-back vibe.  As a result, I found myself seriously jonesing to participate in the autumnal spirit and procured this candle to help foster a festive mood.  In Texas, we no longer have a fireplace in our home (totally unnecessary), so I figured a “fireside” candle would be the best substitute for that familiar wood-burning smell.  The web site calls the scent, “nutmeg, incense and patchouli combined with oakmoss, amber and cedar.”  Yes.  –Bring on the wassail and flannel p.j.s!!!photo (27)

Travel Style: flight to Vegas

Here’s a short & sweet post showcasing what I wore during my flight to Vegas this weekend.  I was headed there for a family girl’s trip and wanted to base my travel outfit on something I could take from day to night.  Plus, I had lunch with my husband before he dropped me off at the airport so I wanted to look cute, ensuring he missed me tremendously. 😉

I pride myself on traveling lighter & smarter with each trip I take.  This is out of necessity, because I started at rock bottom!  I’ve had some pretty horrible travel moments due to my lack of experience, planning & foresight.  Literally crying (in public) from fatigue during a Chicago layover because I couldn’t sleep on the flight from Prague, sweaty 36-hour commutes from India, missed work flights, etc.  However, through these experiences I feel like I’ve learned a little, especially after 1.)  having a job where you fly across the country each week (former PR girl) and 2.) visiting 15 countries with my husband who loves to travel but lacks a certain patience for waiting on checked luggage.

I’m sharing this because I just really like this outfit and also because it was an excellent choice for travel.  Key elements that help in the airport & during a flight:

  • easy-on, easy-off booties (side zip)
  • little socks = not having to go barefoot through security
  • easy loose dress (note:  I LOVE skinny jeans but even the stretchiest of jeggings contain a waistband that can feel constricting after sitting for hours)
  • light layer!  –this camo jacket is my new best friend (and the pockets are great for tucking away my id after the TSA check and easy, quick access to your boarding pass)

(all pieces -expect bracelets- from Anthropologie)
